For residents of Virginia, particularly in the coastal areas like Virginia Beach, a sturdy and reliable roof is non-negotiable. The region’s susceptibility to severe weather, including hurricanes and coastal storms, means that a home’s exterior must be built to withstand powerful winds and heavy rain. When it comes to protecting their most valuable asset, homeowners in Hampton Roads need a roofing contractor they can trust to provide not just a service, but a durable, long-lasting solution. Architectural Exterior Design has established a presence in this market, offering a range of services designed to meet the unique challenges of the Virginia Beach climate. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the company, offering details on their location, services, and why they are a suitable option for local residents.
A home's roof is its first line of defense against the elements. A compromised or poorly installed roof can lead to a host of problems, from water damage and mold to structural issues that can be incredibly costly to repair. The decision to hire a roofing contractor is a significant one, and homeowners often seek professionals who are knowledgeable about the best materials and installation techniques for their specific geographic location. Architectural Exterior Design, as noted on their website, understands that "storms hit us hard here in Hampton Roads and that they take a toll on your home." ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1****Buyer Beware !!!It was suggested by a GAF roofing representative that I file a complaint regarding one of their Certified Contractors, Architectural Exterior Design, Inc. and the owner Mr. Ryan Merritt. In early 2019 I did much work analyzing roof proposals and contractors. My biggest concern was the weather and winds of Virginia Beach. I was willing to pay more to make sure that the roof system chosen and contractor were solid. I eventually selected Architectural Exterior Design and Ryan because:-shingles were to last up to 130 mph-shingles were to be secured with no less than 6 nails per shingle-.32 gage metal perimeter fastened to rakes-the 10 year system plus extended warranty-a positive reference from another home owner who worked with Architectural Exterior Design, Ryan Merritt and the GAF roofing system-Ryan’s website which acknowledged that they understand that “As a roofing contractor they know that storms hit us hard here in Hampton Roads and that they take a toll on your home”On July 20, 2021 I reached out to Ryan to discuss the rake perimeter metal which was just beginning to come off. I asked that his team visit the home to secure the metal with more fasteners and suggested that they use screws. After about 5 calls and 6 months later Ryan’s team visited the home after one piece of the metal had eventually blown off and a second piece was just barely hanging on. After Ryan's visit he contacted me and we discuss workmanship that was pointed out to me by another contractor that has done siding, door, etc. work for me over 15 years. The questionable workmanship was around the inconsistency of fasteners and the spacing of fasteners. What I found was:-some of the perimeter metal was fastened with 1/2 screws that have rusted (not galvanized) and other parts of the metal perimeter was fastened with nails-some of the perimeter metal was fastened 15-18 inches on center and other metal was fastened as far apart as 6 1/2 feet on centerRyan’s statements to my concerns were:-he could not explain why his team used screws as fasteners for part of the perimeter metal and nails for the other part of the perimeter metal-he said the fewer the perimeter fasteners the better due to cupping cause by fasteners on the metal which would invite wind damage-he said that I should expect continued problems with metal dislodging unless I have periodic maintenance to re-nail nails that will work their way out-he said that I should be okay with the damage because there are only 2 pieces of metal that are problematic-he said that I should have realized a reduction in my HVAC bills due to the efficiency of the roof systemBecause I considered all responses inappropriate I decided to review my contract, the GAF warranty and specifications. I contacted GAF’s Technical Services and asked for specifications regarding fasteners. I was able to review GAF Drip Edge and Shingles TAB-R-141 Installation Guidelines for Eave and Rake Edges and was sent a copy of the guidelines which state “Always be sure to follow the printed instructions on the wrappers of GAF shingles and to be sure to: Make sure the drip edge is adequately fastened to the underlying deck a minimum of every 8-10 “ or as required by local building codes.” Obviously the appropriate fasteners for a specific job are important to perimeter being secure, and very different that the message I received from Ryan which was “the fewer fasteners the better”.I continued research online looking at every roofing specification regarding perimeter metal that I could find. Every specification stated that metal should be secured every 8-12 inches on center. Most of these specifications were on different roofing suppliers and association websites. When I shared my research with Ryan he totally dismissed the information because it was from online sources which he had no interest in discussing. I then challenged Ryan to show me anywhere where specifications for perimeter metal stated “the fewer fasteners the better”. Obviously he could not!
Jun 29, 2023 · Mike NobleAED roofing replaced a roof on our rental property in Virginia Beach this past spring. They did an outstanding job, they were very helpful with providing samples to choose from and gave a fair estimate. The work was started and completed on dates quoted. The crew did an excellent job on the clean up. They also helped us on our current home with the replacement of gutters, also another pleasant experience. Ryan Merritt the owner is very professional and friendly. This company is highly recommended from our family to yours!
Sep 25, 2018 · Samantha DornMy husband and I had our roof replaced a couple of years ago and we are completely satisfied with the entire experience. We have referred several of our neighbors, friends and family to this company. We are senior citizens in our upper seventies and feel the price was very fair with the senior discount. Everyone at this company was very professional, courteous and informative. When choosing the proper shingle and color for our home, they were very helpful in this area. It is comforting to us to know that we have such a great warranty with our roof that we never have to worry. We are looking forward to having other areas of work done at our home in the near future with Architectural Exterior Design.
Jan 27, 2016 · Etta FormanWe were referred to Architectural Exterior Design by another roofing contractor, since they are one of the few who deal with membrane roofs. They were prompt, scheduling a walk-through for the next business day and arrived on time for said appointment. They took the time to walk me through the issues found, and gave me a reasonable quote to fix without pressuring me to act at that moment. When they came to fix the issue, they were again quick, prompt, and courteous. I will definitely call them again next time I have a roofing issue.
Jul 07, 2020 · valerie robersonI have to update my review. Few days after installation of my new roof, shingles on one of the edges got raised upwards forming a large gap about 2 inch wide and a foot long. You can see there is nothing holding them down in that spot. No adhesive or nail or anything at all. I called and spoke to Ryan about this and got an instant push back from him. He didn't even look at the area but automatically assumed Its not their fault but my house fault. While replacement was going on no one once mentioned any troubles with that specific area. When I questioned it with him he said they didn't see there was a problem. And when I asked them to fix it they said I have to sign a service agreement for additional $250 for them to come and fix it as the roof is 100 % correct. I offered to send pictures of that shingles gap and he agreed. Once he received pictures where you can clearly see that large gap he continued blaming the house, the metal and everything else but the work they performed. Instead of actually owning the problem and at least coming to look at it first before assuming it's not their fault, he just argued about This not being their fault. This gap is a potential for water leaks not to say it looks horrible.Conversation ended with him saying he will stop by next week for free but he won't fix it as he doesn't think it's his problem. He kept on telling me it will settle and roof will relax but the problem is as longer I wait as bigger that issue becomes as this gap doesn't go away on it's own and only getting worth. This needs to be fixed asap before any additional damages occurred to my house due to any potential heavy rains. If only Ryan were to be willing to actually own their warranty and look at the gap and fix it, it could be a great experience but now it turns into a nightmare. So I don't know what to say here. I do wish I didn't have to go through so much problem to file for, I'm sure, quick fix on brand new roof. Now I feel uneasy about any potential future issues. What if it's going to leak somewhere at some point? Will they tell me that's my ceilings fault and not the Roof's?I wish it was easy to handle issues with their company as we all human and make mistakes.
