The decision to embark on a home improvement project, be it a roof replacement, window installation, or siding upgrade, involves careful consideration. It's important for local users to understand that the reputation of any long-standing business can be built on diverse experiences. While The Tom Yancey Company proudly states its legacy and comprehensive service offerings, like any business with a long operational history, it has encountered a range of customer interactions. One review details a highly problematic and damaging experience, citing negligence and significant financial loss that required arbitration. This review specifically challenges the company's claim of using only "own crews" and highlights a severe instance of alleged mismanagement. Conversely, another customer provides a glowing endorsement, praising the company's honesty, expertise in leak repair where others failed, and the professional work of their crew. This stark contrast underscores the importance for prospective clients to conduct thorough due diligence, including checking official licensing bodies and considering multiple sources of feedback.
Despite the complexity presented by varied customer experiences, The Tom Yancey Company emphasizes its commitment to quality and a broad spectrum of services. Their extensive history suggests adaptability and a broad understanding of various construction disciplines. Based on the provided information, The Tom Yancey Company highlights several aspects, though it is important to note the contrasting customer experiences:
Long-Standing Family Business: They emphasize being a family-owned and operated commercial and residential business established in Sacramento since 1888, suggesting a long history and deep roots in the community. Their contract license number is cited by a customer as indicating generations of business.
Comprehensive Home Improvement Provider: The company offers a broad spectrum of services beyond just roofing, including gutters, windows, and siding, aiming to be a "one-call-does-it-all" solution for homeowners.
Expertise in Challenging Leak Repairs: One positive review specifically highlights their success in diagnosing and repairing a difficult roof leak that other companies claimed could not be repaired without a full roof replacement, showcasing their specialized knowledge.
Use of State-of-the-Art Materials: The company is noted for using "state of the art roofing materials," suggesting a commitment to quality and modern solutions.
Professional and Honest Approach (as per some customers): Adrian and his crew are described as "excellent" and "honest," providing "no pressure" sales tactics and fair quotes in one review. This points to a focus on customer trust and straightforward dealings.
"Our Own Crews" Policy (Contested): The company states in its contracts that "Our own crews on our payroll will perform all work; no subcontracting or day laborers will be allowed." However, a negative review alleges that subcontractors were used, leading to significant issues, which was then supported by an arbitrator's ruling.
Contrasting Customer Experiences: It is crucial to note the presence of highly polarized customer reviews. While one praises honesty and expertise, another details severe negligence, extensive property damage, and a legal ruling against the company for failure to mitigate damages. This suggests that experiences with The Tom Yancey Company can vary significantly.

---For individuals and families in California, particularly within the Sacramento and Carmichael areas, selecting a contractor for significant home projects like roofing requires careful consideration. The Tom Yancey Company, with its historical presence dating back to 1888, offers a wide range of services that could be appealing to locals seeking a single provider for multiple home improvement needs, including diverse roofing solutions, gutters, windows, and siding.
The company’s local base in Carmichael provides inherent advantages, such as familiarity with regional building codes and climate-specific requirements, which can be crucial for durable and compliant installations in California. Furthermore, positive customer feedback highlights attributes like honesty, the use of advanced materials, and an ability to successfully address complex issues, such as challenging roof leaks that other companies could not resolve. For locals seeking a contractor with a long history and a broad service portfolio, this can be a significant draw.
However, prospective clients must also be aware of the extremely serious allegations detailed in one extensive review, which describes significant property damage due to alleged negligence and a legal ruling against the company. This starkly contrasts with the positive experiences and raises critical questions regarding consistency in service delivery and adherence to stated policies (e.g., regarding subcontracting). While the company touts its "own crews" policy, the negative review alleges its violation and catastrophic consequences. Therefore, while The Tom Yancey Company offers a comprehensive set of services and boasts a multi-generational legacy in the community, it is paramount for any Californian considering their services to conduct thorough due diligence, including checking their current license status with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), examining their complaint history, and carefully reviewing all contract terms, especially regarding subcontracting and liability. This careful approach will help ensure peace of mind and protection for your significant home investment.

The Tom Yancey Company Reviews

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The most dishonest, unscrupulous, unethical contractor we have ever hired. The Tom Yancey Company (TYC) literally DESTROYED OUR HOUSE between tear-off of our old roof and install of the new one. Subcontractors they hired, which in their contracts they make a selling-point of never doing - “Note #4: Our own crews on our payroll will perform all work; no subcontracting or day laborers will be allowed”, inexplicably showed up an entire week ahead of the scheduled tear-off date and completely removed our roof. At that point TYC, caught off guard with no crews available or materials on hand - completely unprepared to put the new roof on, decided it wouldn’t be a problem to simply leave our house with no roof whatsoever (not even a tarp) until the scheduled install date 7 days later. 5 days into those 7 it poured rain. Extensive water damage throughout our entire house resulted in all of our possessions in storage and our family living in a hotel for 3 months until our house was repaired/returned to a livable condition. TYC denied any and all responsibility for the nearly $250K in damages but after a prolonged legal back & forth the arbitrator ultimately stated in her ruling that The Tom Yancey Company was in fact “negligent and failed to mitigate”.In TYC’s reply to this review they claim our statements are “misleading and not factual”, and “for the real story call us at…”. Note that in their reply they do not deny that TYC destroyed our home due to negligence and failure to mitigate. They didn’t, and can’t, because the ‘facts’ are that the company did exactly that, exactly as described above, and exactly as they’re very clearly written in 1) the arbitrator’s ruling, 2) the owner’s and his own employees’ sworn depositions, as well as 3) the owner’s own personal text messages to us. We would be more than happy to share copies of these documents and messages with anyone who asks. There is where you’ll get ‘the real story’. Anything TYC says to the contrary is an outright lie.
May 01, 2025 · Eric AlekmanAmazing company. Adrian and his crew were excellent. A friend of ours is a retired contractor of 25 years and recommended Yancey. They have been around for generations. The higher the contract license number; the more years they have been in business. We had a leak and a couple of companies we had out told us they could not repair it and warranty the repair, and that the entire roof had to be replaced, not true. Adrian was honest and did not try to pressure us, as some others have. Adrian gave us the only fair quote and Yancey uses state of the art roofing materials. The crew knew as soon as they tore off the roof where the leak was and did the work in two days! In retrospect, I should have told those other roofers, "Well, if you can't do a repair with a warranty, why would I let you do an entire roof.?" Just sayin'. If you want quality, honesty, no pressure, and peace of mind; Yancey and Adrian are it. Thanks again fellas!
Feb 27, 2025 · Sherry V.Adrian answered so many questions and provided really great recommendations for me to consider. Very professional guy. Mr. Yancey drove out to inspect my roof, flew his drone over the house and used a high def camera to inspect the quality and placement of the shingles. He gave me fantastic advice, and given his depth of knowledge, I felt great confidence in his judgment. We had Yancey rebuild our roof 20 years prior, with ridge vents. They did such a fantastic job back then, and that work has stood the test of time. I just had to give them some repeat business.Anyway, I walked into the office at 2pm, and Mr. Yancey drove over at 3pm to inspect, on the SAME DAY. He ended up telling me my roof was already in good shape, and said not to worry. How can any business do any better than this? It's the gold standard of customer relations. Many thanks to the Yancey Roofing Company!!
Dec 19, 2024 · Joseph Lauinger"Old Man Yancey" is a scam artist. He charged me $2500 for a roof leak repair that took less than one hour to fix and required no materials. I've added a picture of the extremely vague contract that he says is fair and ethical. I'm also considering filing a complaint with the California Contractor's Board. I originally chose Yancey because he had so many good reviews but I guess he's having money troubles now. Beware, especially if you are a female homeowner and over 60--I think that's why I was singled out for this scam. I've learned an important lesson.
Jan 18, 2025 · M WTom Yancey Roofing is the best!! We spoke with many roofing companies in preparing to have our roof replaced and are so glad that we chose Tom Yancey Roofing! Adrian was prompt in getting us a quote, was competitive with the price and always answered our phone calls throughout the process. Adrian was so helpful and knowledgeable and wonderful to work with. Our old roof had a few leaks and I felt they made us a priority in there schedule during this stormy January/February. The crew was efficient, on time and there when they said they would be. Marlo was also very helpful and kind on the phone. I would highly recommend this company to friends and family! My roof looks beautiful and I couldn't be happier with it! Thank you so much Adrian, Marlo and crew at Tom Yancey Roofing!!Robin
